Hey Man, We are from Canton, Ohio We are starting off small, because we want to make sure we are giving you the best coffee. Our idea is to get people educated in great coffee. I was in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica in the early 80's. There I met a great guy who is now my best friend Humberto Hernandez. Humberrto was always bragging (he is so quiet and humble that bragging is not usually his forte) that the best coffee in Costa Rica is from his town in Santa Maria de Dota, de Los Santos. In the meantime another life long friend (Nancy Rosengard) and fellow work companion went to work for a coffee roaster. There she found a great coffee from Costa Rica and sent me on a mission to find this coffee plantation in Costa Rica. So I called on Humberto, and the two of us made an appointment at the local Co-op in his town. That is when we discovered that the coffee Nancy was raving about was the same!
So I packed up my suitcase with ten bags , which had the custom officials in Houston crazy! and brought it back to Ohio. I gave away the bags as presents and lo and behold my friends were asking me for more and more.... In the meantime I was busy selling great beer and wine which took most of my time. In April 2007 (friday the the 13th to be exact). My father and I sold the business to a life long competitor , which left me the opportunity to work full time in the coffee business.
I have learned a few things along the way from pionerring good beer like Sam Adams, Great Lakes, Sierra Nevada, Guinness, and Hoegarrten to name a few. That one can have a great label but the product has to be excellent. I also learned from my father (James D. Lockshin) that your customer service is everything. If one can not get your product than you have left the door open for your competition.
Finally you ask why the name the Hippie Coffee Company. I am a open minded, to the point, and share my ideas and goals with the people I sell to and with whom I work. In October of 2006 I went on a jaunt to the New Belgium Brewery (Fat Tire). There I met group of people who love great beer and work for a common goal of selling, marketing and producing a great product. I was so impressed by this "hippie style " of company that I decided that if I ever start a new business I too will have that 'hippie ' philosphy.
Hopefully you too will enjoy this coffee. If you have any comments and suggestions please do not hesitate to write or call. We are here for you the customer!
